Original hickory floor |
The modern kitchen combine aesthetics and convenience. New appliances include Maytag self cleaning oven, spacious refrigerator, garbage disposal and dishwasher. The floor is original hickory. It had been painted red, and was almost covered with new oak before a test sanding revealed the hickory. The kitchen opens to a mud room coming off a side porch in a privacy fenced back yard. The mud room contains a washer and dryer hook-up and access to the basement. At the far end of the kitchen, you have a cozy bath with ceramic tiled floor and vintage claw-foot tub. This bathroom features a porthole window above the tub. |

Children’s names |
The dining room is bounded by a wood wainscot fashioned from coat closet panels taken from a 1922 building on the Huffman School site right before it was demolished. If you look close, you can still see the names of children from generations ago. Right above the wainscot is a plate rail. This rail was originally chalk ledge in the same classrooms as the coat closet panels. A china closet has been added using vintage 1880’s casement window sash. The floor is original fir and has been refinished with care. |

For Rent |
The Huffman School was recently renovated into senior apartments. To meet code, historic elements needed to be removed. They were saved and used here. The first step you take into 1945 will be on a piece of chalk board slate installed in Huffman School in 1896, saved from the landfill in 1999. The beautifully sculpted trim put into use in 1874 found a new home here. The staircase came from a different Dayton home, the fireplace, well, who knows where!
